What happens when a church listens before it answers? In this episode of the Dulin Weekly Podcast, Pastor James reflects on the church-wide listening process at Dulin United Methodist Church in Falls Church, Virginia. The process began with more than a year of one-on-one and small-group conversations. It deepened this August with seven guiding questions and a congregational survey.
James explains why listening is not polling. A listening process is not about tallying votes or choosing between hymns. It is about hearing the longings underneath people's ideas, such as belonging, mission, fellowship, purpose, and care. Church members of every generation, from teens to people in their 80s, bring different nuances and dreams. James describes those differences as gifts, not failures.
He also explores church vision as something discovered, not invented. The question moves from "What should we build?" to "What is God already doing here?" For churches in discernment, this is a practical way to join the Holy Spirit's work rather than imposing a strategic plan. James invites listeners to download the listening report, pray over the themes, and share what they hear.
This episode is for United Methodist congregations, church leaders, and anyone interested in congregational discernment, church vision and mission, and faithful community listening.
